3 Vital Tools that Will Structure Your Job Search
3 Vital Tools that Will Structure Your Job Search Job hunting is a test of organisation and persistence. Lose either and youll lose the race. The job market is more competitive than ever, with an average of 250 CVs received for each job position. You can never predict where or when your next dream vacancy will appear, so stop fantasising about desired results and instead devise practical steps to achieve them! Being on time with applications is just as important as being suitable for a position. But how do you manage visiting so many job boards, job search engines, and the career sections on sites in as little time as possible? With any task you want efficiently completed, you will need an organised checklist. But how do you perfectly lead your job search? Here are three useful tools to managing your vacancy hunt, and perhaps saving you time. Plus, all three of these apps are completely free, and can be used on both desktop and mobile devices! 1. Notational Velocity Notational Velocity is an application that allows you to store and retrieves notes. Whats brilliant about this tool is that its a cloud-based note storage application, so you can instantly take your notes from the computer to your devices. I use this app constantly to keep my notes organised and together. Beyond keeping track of your job search ideas, if ideas strike you at awkward moments on-the-go, Notational Velocity is the perfect app to type up some concepts quickly, ready for when you get home to your desktop. Also, notes work offline, and sync automatically when back online. Notational Velocity also works with useful note apps such as Evernote and Simplenote on iOS and Android. 2. Listango Listango is a simple bookmarking tool that makes it easy to save, organise and share your favourite web pages. You can now also import all of your bookmarks from your favourite web browser to Listango. This means you can copy all of your bookmarks from your numerous web browsers and access them from any device anywhere, continuing your relentless job search. The website is pleasant to use, and theres a Chrome extension app to quickly add bookmarks to your account. If theres an area in which Listango can improve, its the site not being mobile optimised. Hopefully soon theyll release a mobile-optimised site, or even better a dedicated Android and iOS app. 3. Pocket Pocket is a good application for saving things you want to view later. You can access Pocket on your computer, iOS or Android devices, even without an internet connection. Pocket allows you to save almost anything, including articles, links and videos. You can save directly from your browser or from apps like Twitter, Flipboard and Pulse. While Pocket is a versatile application, I personally dont find the interface for reading articles is as good as Instapaper, another read later app that primarily focuses on a minimalist style for saving and reading articles. Use these tools to not only Bookmark websites for companies youre interested in, but to keep your notes and important bookmarks in sync. Stay organised by using these cloud-based apps to their full advantage! How do you manage your job search effectively? Do you use any of the tools mentioned? Be sure to also discover How to Find Content that Will Keep You Relevant on Social. Image: Shutterstock

The Generational Fault Line - Quake or Tremor - Career Pivot
The Generational Fault Line - Quake or Tremor - Career Pivot The Generational Fault Line Why the differences between generations will reshape your workplace There is a definite Generational Fault Line that was clearly denoted in a new report I was asked to review. The report,The Great Generational Shift â"Why the differences between generations will reshape your workplace was developed by Hudson, a leading provider of specialized recruitment, talent management, and recruitment process outsourcing services in the Americas and worldwide. This is by far the most comprehensive study of generational issues in the workplace that has given psychographic assessments to a large audience (28,000) and was multicultural (22 languages). I have written extensively on the Multi-Generational Workplace on this blog. This report largely supports many of the conclusions that I have written but is backed with a comprehensive study of thousands of workers. Generational Fault Line in Leadership Style Baby boomers were trained in traditional leadership traits based on leading, decisive, motivating, and persuasive. Baby boomers scored significantly higher in these leadership traits than Gen X and Gen Y. However, the report states: Todayâs workforce does not need to be persuaded of the facts (they can check Google) but instead seeks leaders who can sift through mounds of data and translate it into meaningful insights. Gen Y has been raised in the era of big data. It is more about being able to analyze data and translate that into business results. Baby boomer leaders were trained to be strategic in their leadership style. Gen Yers have entered the job market at a time of tremendous change and uncertainty. The report states: Generation Y is much less âstrategicâ than Boomers, which may reflect todayâs increasingly volatile and uncertain business environment. It is harder than it was in the past to develop long-term business strategies, and leaders need to be nimble to deal with frequent changes to the competitive landscape. Long term strategy is far less important in a world where you have to be able to pivotâ¦and pivot quickly. Do you see the generational fault line pressure building? Listen to the most recent episode Boomers Will Have to Adjust Expectations The generational fault line is going to shift. If you are a baby boomer, you have to accept it is going to happen! With many baby boomers unable to retire, baby boomers will have to adjust their expectations. The study finds that baby boomers are less ambitious and altruistic than Gen Y. I cannot speak for everyone, but I am far less ambitious now in my late 50s than I was in my 20s and 30s. There is no question in my mind that Gen Y is far more altruistic than baby boomers. The report states: As new leadership traits creep into the workplace, Boomers will need to be aware of the key drivers behind the visibly different behavior. Avoiding judgment and embracing Boomers have a great deal still to contribute to the workforce in the coming two decades, not only in their own skills but in passing on these skills and mentoring younger generations. Yet they are less ambitious and altruistic than younger people so will need to be motivated to share those skills in other ways. I previously wrote that it is highly likely you will work for someone who looks like your kid! Are you ready to mentor the next generation to be leaders? I have expressed concern in the past on where Gen Y will acquire and learn leadership skills given the demise of long term corporate employment. There is a definite generational fault line between Baby Boomer and Gen Y expectations in the workplace. Generation Y May Not Be Entitled and Impatient, Just Misunderstood I have said over and over that: Gen Y is the way they are becauseâ"we made them that way! Gen Y was raised in an environment where everyone wins. Everyone gets a trophy or blue ribbon. These expectations need to be managed. At the same time, they were raised in a connected world. They are used to constant communications and, therefore, feedback. I hear complaints that Gen Y do not have interpersonal skills. They have very different interpersonal and communications styles than baby boomers or Gen X. The report states: Raised in a connected world, they will also prefer to communicate through non-traditional channels and may need more regular feedback and reinforcement than other generations think necessary. Organizations need to ensure they are aware of the benefits of a well-rounded individual and provide opportunities for Generation Y to see and experience other traits such as motivation and persuasion in action. What About Gen X Lori Hock, Hudson CEO Americas stated: Generation X will have to become the diplomats in this great generational shift. They will have to learn traditional leadership skills from baby boomers and adapt them to the new workplace. They will need to learn to lead but share with baby boomer leadership and up and coming Gen Y leaders. Every generation is necessary going forward in to keep the generation fault line from creating an earthquake. Every generation will need to be making adjustments and accommodations to create a stronger and more united collective. This is just in time, especially in the USA, as we have much new and re-building to do ahead. Business, as usual, is changing much faster than any new way is replacing it. Take the time to download and read this report, The Great Generational Shift â"Why the differences between generations will reshape your workplace. What are you doing to keep the generational fault line slowly shifting and preventing a major earthquake? Marc Miller Like what you just read? Share it with your friends using the buttons above. Whats in a name - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Whats in a name - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog One of the true pleasures of being a Kjerulf (or a Kierulff, a Kjerulff or a Kj?rulf) is to know that Im part of a huge family of over 11.000 other Kjerulfs. I know this beacuse of one guy, Cap Kierulff, who has collected the entire family tree going back 600 years to our common ancestor, Anders Kjaerulf. I looked myself up in the family tree, and seeing my own name in that context gave me a real sense of having roots of being connected to history. But it doesnt stop there: Every four years theres a Kiermeet, an international Convention of Kierulffs. Im thinking of going to the next one, which is in 2006 in the Philippines. I invited Cap to visit my website and he did. His nice comments on it can be seen here. Interesting fact about Cap K: He was not only a witness to, but a key participant in, the birth of the Hi-Fi phenomenon. Read all about it. Thanks for visiting my blog. Franchise Discovery Day To Clinch A Deal - Work It Daily
Franchise Discovery Day To Clinch A Deal - Work It Daily Discovery Day presents a make-or-break moment for many would-be franchisees. Related: Franchise Discovery Day: A Franchiserâs POV For Megan Yu, a visit to the franchise parent company of Signarama, United Franchise Group, in West Palm Beach, Fla., helped seal her decision. Of course, by this time, she and her partner, Andy Yu, her father, had already spent almost six months researching businesses they might open in Ann Arbor, Mich. Casting a wide net at first, they looked at all options, including purchasing an independent business. They chose a franchise because they liked all the support and training offered as part of the deal. âFor me it was the one-on-one interactions with the owners that was huge,â Megan said. Meeting other franchisees who shared their own experiences and offered a ready support network raised Meganâs comfort level with this new business. During a carefully choreographed Discovery Day, Megan was greeted by her âhostâ at her hotel and taken to company headquarters, where she met with current franchisees, technology, and financial support staff. She toured a âbrand new, state-of-the-art training facility,â all of which convinced Megan this was the business for her. Franchise Discovery Day will either reel you in with a display of stellar services and support staff or youâll discover something about the franchisor that sends you to the exit with a feeling of doubt. For example, you may find the CEO has recently changed and youâre not sure about the transition. Or perhaps, youâll discover you donât like the support staff. For Megan and Andy, the advantage of a franchise, with all the systems in place to help them through the start-up phase, eventually won out over other options. Megan, 29, who had been working as a manager of a retail store, gave her monthâs notice soon after the Franchise Discovery Day. âIt boils down to having a world-recognized name and, of course, corporate support,â said Andy Yu, 56, a retired engineer. âWe donât want to get into all these miscellaneous details that will consume all our time and effort.â So, instead of figuring out how to negotiate the best lease agreement, select office furnishings, stationery, and myriad other necessities of their new operation, Yu said, they could spend their time on activities, like sales and marketing, that have more direct impact on the bottom line. They hope to open their new sign-making business by late September. So, how do you prepare? Said Yu: âDo your homework.â Before you even arrive for Franchise Discovery Day, you should: Do A Comparison Study Look at a multitude of business types that might suit your experience, interests, and lifestyle.
